Maybe... Or when is progress, not really progress?

Brenda over at Coffee Tea Books and Me has a lovely entry today... Painting word pictures of things around her house. She mentioned wishing she had a digital camera, to snap instant pics of these things. And this got me to thinking...

If she did have a digital camera, she would have just snapped a pic and put it up. But! Doing so, would she have further honed her ability to show these things to us, with her choice and placement of words? I don't think so.

What if Jane Austin had a digital camera and e-mail? Would we today have a delightful compilation of her letters to her sister? I doubt it. Why hand-write fun notes, about the pretty ribbon she found, to perk up a no-longer-new bonnet? No need to. Just snap a picture and pop it into an e-mail and click it... to Cassandra. Who would have looked at it, replied her view of the choice of ribbon, and deleted it. Gone! Gone for us. Those letters... No longer around after that moment,
or after her lifetime, to be gathered into a book for our enjoyment.

So, maybe..... Not all our *wonnnnnnnnnerful* progress, is fully progress.

What is the rule by which to chart this?

And I suppose it's like so many things.... Subject to individual appraisal. So many things to which we've become very accustomed, would be impossible, without our technological progress. None of us wants to wake up tomorrow morning and have our computers gone. And yet, is there a trade-off, of gains and losses? Does each person view the trade-off, differently? Of course they do. That's the nature of us being individuals. And I happen to like this way... of each being an individual.

And now, I think I'd best put this ramble to bed. :-) I thought I knew where I was headed, when I started. But I no longer am sure, where I'm headed. Time to quit!

But in the end, I'm glad Brenda can paint such wonderful word pictures. Wish I could do as well. Maybe... I should put down my camera more often, and try doing it myself................ :-)
